The LCMS believes that the Bible is without error in all that it says. The ELCA avoids making such statements, holding that Scripture is not necessarily always accurate on such matters as history and science.

That's right: according to current trends, the church will basically cease to exist within the next generation. In some ways, this is old news. Mainline decline has been a reality for over half a century, and the trends are well established.

At issue in the dispute were congregational autonomy versus synodical authority and the nature of the church's mission. The Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches also ordained women, while the Missouri Synod did not.
